Mom's Workout Buddy

I was reflecting on my FIT4MOM life the other day. No reason, really. Maybe it's because I had just spent part of a Sunday afternoon meeting with our instructor team who I adore working with and am always in awe of when I take their classes. As we discussed the upcoming fall season we talked about the new shirts we're offering this month.

These are not the great FIT4MOM tank tops, of which I have nearly a dozen. No, these shirts are tiny and colorful. I saw them and they made me smile. "Mom's Workout Buddy."

I've been taking or teaching Stroller Strides for 2 1/2 years now. Every class has had a constant. He has big hazel eyes and wild brown curls, almost as wild as he is. My son Henry has been going to Stroller Strides since he was three months-old. Feeling the wind on his face as I run is his favorite. I hear the pounding of my feet on the pavement between his squeals of "Go, Mommy, go!" He thinks nothing of his mother holding a squat in front of him, singing a nursery rhyme song and tickling his feet. He knows the words to "Itsy Bitsy Spider" and "The Ants Go Marching" not because he's seen them on a cartoon but because he watches me do lunges while singing it. His new favorite thing is to say, "Mama! You sweaty!" as I unbuckle him at the end of class. He wiggles away from me, laughing, anxious to join his friends for the day's play group, or just to hang out and swap toy trucks.

My 5 1/2 year-old daughter, Charlotte has been part of many a Stroller Strides class. I love how she understands the importance of exercise because I teach class. She says, "It makes you healthy!" She even explained to her Kindergarten teacher that her mommy is a "Fitness Instructor." I was really proud she knew that term.

We joke that Stroller Strides kids are experts at counting backwards from ten. They also love to do burpees and squats in the living room. My kids do. This week in the car they sang "Firetruck Abs" at the top of their lungs. What we do as moms makes an impression. It's an amazing thing.

I was so excited when I heard about a welcome gift for new kids who's moms become members this month. In September, moms who get a membership with FIT4MOM Midtown Raleigh get a "Mom's Workout Buddy" shirt. I must get one for Henry too, and Charlotte if she wants one. I'm getting him a 3T or a 4T. I want it to be a little big with hope that he'll sit in the stroller and be my workout buddy for awhile longer.
