February, 2018 Mom of the Month

We love when a mom can utilize our programs and enrich her life through pregnancy and beyond. February's Mom of the Month started FIT4Baby when she was pregnant and now she is rocking it in her first session of Body Back. Oh, and did we mention she brings her adorable baby to Stroller Strides too? Meet Kelley Shaver and read more about this Kansas native's fitness journey and her love for "Journey."

Name: Kelley Shaver

Age: 38

Hometown: Hays, Kansas

Family: "Jesse and I will celebrate 11 years of marriage in June. We started dating in 2001! We have one daughter named Joanna. She's 7 months-old."

Education: "I went to Fort Hays State University in my hometown for undergrad and then Vanderbilt in Nashville, TN for a Master's in Speech-Language Pathology."

Career: "I am a full-time mom now. B.K. (Before Kid) I worked as a speech-language pathologist for over 10 years. I have enjoyed working in several different settings and with a wide range of ages. (From preschool kiddos to near centenarians.)

How did you find FIT4MOM? "I found FIT4MOM online when I was a few months pregnant.

Describe your FIT4Baby journey. "I was scared to workout when I was pregnant. I had been fairly active prior to pregnancy. I enjoyed running and yoga. As soon as I found out about our little one I stopped exercising and it took a toll on me physically and mentally. FIT4Baby was just what I needed. The experience was so much fun, all while getting a safe, effective workout. It was so helpful to chat with others (newbies like me and mama veterans) about the joys and woes of pregnancy. I left each class glad that I went, a little more connected, and assured that I did something positive for my health and my baby's. Thank you, Carol Bonds!"

What do you like about Stroller Strides? "I started Stroller Strides when Joanna was about 2 months-old and thank God for that. I needed to move and get out of the house. Again, the time spent connecting with other moms is so important. And my postpartum body needed (and still needs) the workout challenge. Involving Joanna in the experience with songs and movements makes it fun for both of us. Well, most of the time, Joanna occasionally rages, but everyone gets that. Plus, mornings we go to Stroller Strides lead to much more productive days! Getting out and getting going makes a world of difference for us."

What brought you to Body Back? "I was tired of wearing my maternity pants. And I wanted to do something the 'old me' would have enjoyed. It feels so good to be making progress and to feel strong enough to gracefully lay my growing daughter down in her crib without waking her. Graceful is a relative term, of course!"

What would you tell a first-time pregnant mom who was considering our programs? "Do it! It has made a huge difference in our lives and it is sure to touch yours at any stage of motherhood.

What is something funny or unusual people wouldn't know about you? "Not sure if this is funny, or unusual, but although I do not consider myself a super fan, I have seen Journey in concert. Twice. And I'd do it again should the opportunity present itself. It was great fun."
